Week 6

The first week after the holiday was all about reviewing things with students. As they finished all the letters and the numbers, my goal was assessing students learning with my teacher.

First thing that I noticed is, my students love games and competitions and they really get motivated and engaged to participate even  the ones who rarely speak or work. For that I decided to assess and review the student knowledge of letters for literacy and numbers for numeracy. For the literacy the activity was for each group, the group was about 4 and 5 students each. As you can see from the picture, I wrote each child name in small board then I showed each one a card with the letter. If the child know it he get a point and if he didn’t I asked another one and so on. at the end we had a winner how get extra time for playing time.
For the numeracy it was as a group work.

Another activity for assessing and reviewing was using the smart board because the student love it and it is new to them. I use it for many things like letters , numbers and words.

  2. It's good that you use your knowledge of your children to create competitive activities for them and that you understand that they like to be active.

  3. MY COMMENTS ON YOUR LESSON - THURSDAY 25TH APRIL

This was not your most inspired or best lesson, Huda. As usual, you praised the students and you spoke positively to the children, but I felt you didn't manage the class as well as you sometimes do, which meant that Nicole had to quieten the class for you. You had to use a raised voice with the class because they lost attention, but I think this is mainly due to them not being involved in the lesson and your lack of positive comments to focus their attention.

I think the Whole Class introduction required more thoughtful planning, so that the children are more involved in reading/saying and thinking about the language, instead of parroting after you. Very similar language and task to the last lesson I saw. How can you plan for the children to use the language, to read, speak, listen or write it? You could ask the children to read the sentence first, instead of you saying it and they copying you. You tried to get students to focus on sentence rather than the word - you could make the clapping a game.

Your use of English for routines was not as good as it has been - your use of Arabic (e.g. repeating instructions) needs improvement. The class management was reactive to the children's actions rather than telling them in advance your expectations. In general, your use of creative ideas was missing in this lesson.

In summary, I know that you can do much better than this and perhaps your domestic situation has affected you. I hope to see an improvement on Wednesday.

The experiment in the small group was nice and the students enjoyed seeing it, but what did the children do? You should plan for them to do something, too. It would be beneficial for you to narrate the experiment, you do not need to phrase everything as a question, but describe what is happening - not 'Shu Hatha?'.

I get the feeling you hadn't completely planned this lesson and you had not considered what the children would do.
