My first day in the Kindergarten

Hi everyone
My first day in the school was good, I knew the teachers and the principal in the school so that wasn’t a problem for me. First of all, I discus what I am doing in the TP and my action research topic with Ms. Sally which is the head of the English teachers. After that I met my MST teacher Ms. Nicole and I explain for here that I am doing 50% of her teaching and we discuss the weekly plan but until now I didn’t discuss my research topic with her because that day she was busy with parents.
On Sunday I did one lesson in numeracy and it was about sorting things. The lesson was OK however I faced a problem teaching them because I don’t know  their names and the teaching style they are used too. I think we need few days to observe before we start teaching. Also in this day my teacher was busy and in Monday which is today we had a trip to Bwadi mall.  So actually I didn’t have a normal day until now !!!

  1. hello Huda,

I agree with you that it’s hard to teach without knowing the students names, I faced the same problem and then I labeled their names. I also agree that we should first observe and see the different ways that the teacher use in teaching as well children’s levels and abilities to start teaching with confidence and knowledge about the children.

  2. Ofcorse we will have some issues in the first week especially with their names because they are more than 15 children and it's hard to learn them quickly. Don’t forget also that we are in the beginning of the year and many changes still happening. Good luck with your practice and I hope everything will be better.

  3. Why not use the need to get to know students' names as a learning activity? They could make a name tag or name plate (in Arabic, if necessary) - to help you. Of course, it would be nice to watch and get to know the students and their abilities first, but it's often through engaging with children as they learn that we understand their strengths and weaknesses. Remember, too, that at the start of a new semester, as a teacher you go to teach the students immediately - no names, knowledge of them or their abilities. This is real life!! You can cope, Huda!!

Also, can you please write reflections on particular lessons (or parts of lessons). If you use the reflective cycle we discussed in class, you will find you can structure your thinking and gain more clarity on your teaching, too.
